My Why: Kimberly Thomas

Kimberly Thomas
Lakeside Team Lead

I grew up in Coleman, Tx., and lived in the Lubbock, Tx., area where I taught high school for 17 years. My husband and I have a large family, resulting in 11 grandchildren! Once I retired from teaching, I wanted to simply relax, but I felt restless. Although I have many family members who struggle with alcoholism and several who are addicted to various street drugs, it wasn’t until two of my close family members found themselves struggling with their mental health that I decided to work towards my degree in counseling.   After attaining my degree, I worked in an incarceration setting and a university setting before opening my private practice where I thought I would be for the rest of my career as a counselor. However, when I heard about Warriors Heart, I couldn’t resist. My husband was a firefighter for 32 years, and 1 of our sons joined the Marine Corp. After he got out of the Marine Corp, our son became a police officer, and now another son has joined him!  Through several ride-ons with one of my sons, I gained invaluable insight into the warrior population.

MY WHY

My why is that I want to contribute what I can and be a part of making sure every warrior son and daughter has a place like Warriors Heart to come home to…a place where they are wanted, understood, and valued…when it is needed!
